Against the turquoise waters of Egypt’s Red Sea, some of the world’s strongest open-water swimmers came together for a competition defined by endurance, determination and the drive to go further.
The World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup 2026 began its season in Somabay, Egypt, on 27–28 March, welcoming 95 athletes representing 26 federations for two days of world-class competition.
Where Endurance Meets the Open Water
Unlike racing inside a swimming pool, open-water competition challenges athletes to continuously adapt. Changing currents, waves, wind and close competition make every kilometre unpredictable.
The Somabay programme featured the Women’s and Men’s 10km races, followed by the Mixed 4x1500m Relay. Each event demanded more than physical strength—it required strategy, focus and the confidence to keep moving forward when conditions became difficult.
Australia’s Moesha Johnson opened her 2026 campaign with victory in the Women’s 10km, while Germany’s Florian Wellbrock delivered another dominant performance to claim the Men’s 10km title.
Germany completed the weekend by retaining the Mixed 4x1500m Relay title, with Lea Boy, Leonie Martens, Oliver Klemet and Florian Wellbrock combining to secure victory after an intense final battle with Hungary.
A Global Stage in Egypt
Hosting the opening stop of the World Cup once again placed Egypt at the centre of international aquatic sport.
Somabay’s natural landscape, clear waters and demanding open-water conditions created a powerful setting for athletes from around the world to begin their 2026 season. More than a race, the event represented the growth of aquatic sport and Egypt’s increasing presence on the global sporting calendar.
